How can the Church manage its ecclesiastical assets and at the same time declare itself “poor for the poor people” as affirmed by Pope Francesco? The author analyses some of the most important critiques of ecclesiastical assets as proposed by Horst Herrmann, Johannes Dyba and Eugenio Corecco. With an in-depth analysis of the New Testament, it emerges that the Gospel should be available for free but that ministers have the right to be financially supported. The balancing of these two opposite aims must be interpreted on the grounds that the legitimacy of ecclesiastical assests depends on the scope of their use.
